WISE

Women in Subsea & Energy (WISE) was founded in 2016 by Subsea Energy Australia to address the need for gender parity in the subsea sector.

In 2017, WISE was awarded a two-year “Women in STEM & Entrepreneurship” grant from the Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science. This funding enabled a series of initiatives to attract, retain, develop, and promote women in the subsea industry.

In June 2017, WISE secured the support of Senator Michaelia Cash, Minister for Women, to benchmark gender inclusion statistics within the Australian subsea sector. The findings were documented in the report Establishing the Baseline, prepared by Professor Linley Lord, Dr. Melissa Marinelli, and Ms. Danielle Leotta.

These insights formed the foundation for developing the Women in Subsea Energy Framework, which focuses on four key pillars: Attract, Retain, Promote, and Develop.

WISE promotes strategies centred around our four pillars to advance women in STEM roles across the subsea and ocean-based industries, striving for gender equity and fostering diversity.

Following the conclusion of its initial government grant, WISE broadened its focus from subsea engineering to include a wider range of STEM fields. The network is open to anyone who shares its vision of empowering women and achieving gender balance in these critical industries.
